Good news outlets

Creative Boom

Creative Boom

I’m sure I’m not the only one who finds the daily news streams to be hard-hitting, charging, but often truly heart-breaking and pretty depressing.

I know a fair few people who are starting to switch off. “It’s too depressing”, “I can’t hear about another terrorist attack or another child molester”, “I don’t want to be numb to the real world but can’t handle this every day” - All very relatable sentiments.

Being something of an optimist, I have a few daily essentials that I go to, to make sure I’m getting a mix of what’s going on. So here’s a little list of some outlets I rely on for my good news stories…

Positive News

The name says it all really. The incredible stories shared through Positive News range from breakthroughs in science; developments in environmental matters; interviews and case studies with the most inspiring people; conversations encouraging mental health discussions across the world along with where improvements are happening; the importance of insects, design, seasonal food…

If you are ever in doubt of there being good news, take a look here for 5 minutes and you will find something to smile about.

The Happy Newspaper

As Emily Coxhead, creator of The Happy Newspaper puts it:

“Every single day there are people helping others and doing incredible things in all corners of the planet and the majority of them aren't celebrated, but we think they deserve to be recognised. We aim to bring a refreshing twist on what we typically know as 'news', reporting on positive changes and truly inspiring people.”

This is a quarterly publication, and the jolliest bit of post. It’s £3.99 per quarter – if I listed the things it’s cheaper than, things might get depressing, so, it’s a bargain full of good news.

Nowness

Nowness is a video channel premiering the best in global arts and culture across art and design, culture, fashion and beauty, music and food and travel.

The videos here are stunning. The locations, people, craft involved are enough to give you a step back from reality for a moment, only to realise that this is real and the finer things in life are as lovely as ever, along with the less beautiful things being captured in the most breath-taking quality.

I’ve listened to many an Oscars speech (like I’m the only one?!) mentioning the honour in being able to provide a moment of escapism to viewers – Nowness does just that. It may also give you serious house/life envy, or just material for Pinterest - A favourite is the video with Jasper Conran - heaven. You have been warned.

Creative Boom

Almost ten years young, Creative Boom is an online magazine that “celebrates, inspires and supports the creative community.”

I have been using this as a channel of inspiration for all things creative for years. There is always an article on someone or something that makes you want to get up and get ‘doing’, and always of real quality as well.

With a focus on art, crafts, graphic design, illustration, photography and travel, Creative Boom showcases emerging and established talent, shares recommended, interviews an array of incredibly inspiring creatives at the top of their game, or just beginning, and also delves into people's inspiring workspaces, sharing invaluable tips and insight to help viewers at every stage of a creative career.

Plenty of fantastic articles for freelancers too, so do take a look if you need a boost on that level - it’s been even more helpful over the last few months than I could have imagined.

Refinery 29

Some wonderful pieces on just about everything, the writers don’t shy away from a tricky conversation.

But for this instance, the monthly roundup of what’s coming to Netflix alone is something that brings me joy. (For anyone considering judging this admission, sleep deprivation is very real at the moment and Netflix is pretty much a public service for this)
